Antique Art Print Etching of the Saint Peters Basilica circa 1700s
Antique Art Print Etching of the Saint Peters Basilica by Vincenzio Vangelisti made in the 1700s (18th century) after Guercino (1591-1666).
Dimensions: 22" Tall x 14" wide.
The Cathedral of Saint Peter's ("La Catedra di S. Pietro") etching after the Renaissance artist Guercino.
At the time of the etching the Basilica was actually a Cathedral.
Later in history the Bishop was moved to Saint John Lateran Cathedral.
St. Peter's is one of the four churches in the world that hold the rank of major basilica, all four of which are in Rome.
Contrary to popular misconception, it is not a cathedral because it is not the seat of a bishop; the cathedra of the pope as Bishop of Rome is at Saint John Lateran.
Etching is an intaglio printmaking process in which lines or areas are incised using acid into a metal plate in order to hold the ink. In etching, the plate can be made of iron, copper, or zinc.
